Rik Lazenby is an accomplished and inspired mixed media artist and teacher. His studio is located in Hoover, Alabama at Artists on the Bluff. Rik has a strong art background with both a Bachelor and Master’s Degree from the University of Alabama with an emphasis in art education. While at the University, Rik studied under Richard Zoellner, Howard Goodson, Frank Engle, Angelo Granata but his primary mentor was Al Sella. From 1968 until 2000, Rik served as a teacher, principal and director in the Jefferson County School System.
After retiring from education, Rik has refocused on his art journey. Rik sees himself as a Traveller with little control over his pilgrimage. Rik states, “When I try to create through my own eyes and with my own reasoning, the end result is shallow and stale. But when I let the Ruach HaKodesh (Holy Spirit) lead, my total being is immersed in colors and shapes. I see spiritual relationships in multiple dimensions. They move through my mind appearing, receding and reappearing. The art piece moves through dimensions with little regard for distance or barriers. As I have grown older I have been taught by the Ruach HaKodesh to wait for the whisper and allow the Ruach HaKo’Desh to come into me and take charge of the creative process. I wait and the Comforter arrives. Often I have no idea what will appear on the board. Usually I’m given a genesis but the piece moves through a metamorphosis with the Ruach HaKodesh as the guide. If I try to move ahead on my own, I will be stopped and made to “walk around that mountain one more time until the Comforter again takes the lead.” It is a humbling experience to watch the Comforter work. The Ruach HaKodesh always comes to guide me into all things true. He will not speak on His own; He speaks only what He hears and He will tell me what is yet to come. Because all that belongs to the Father belongs to Yeshua. The Ruach HaKodesh brings to me truth through Yeshua, many time visually!”
