Cathy Phares
President 2023

Cathy has been immersed in art since a young child. Her father was a well-known photographer who also painted, so Cathy painted and drew alongside her father, visiting art galleries and museums. She claims no particular style as she doesn’t want to feel
constricted to only one. There’s too much fun in exploring.


Christi Bunn
President Elect
& Technical Administrator

Christi’s fine art paintings and drawings have been commissioned by clients across the United States & U.K. While her specialty is architecture, she also does portraits of people and animals. Her art has been featured in Hoover’s Magazine, Alabama Cooperative, and Light and Life magazines, and she had two solo shows in 2021-22. When not working on commissions, she loves painting in vivid color of everything from florals to landscapes to scenes of everyday life. She graduated from the U of AL with a degree in Advertising/Fine Art. She owns her own fine art, web and graphic design business. She has served the club as tech admin and various board positions, including president 2016.


Fulghum, Martha King

Martha Fulghum
VP of Programs

Martha is very active in plein air painting working in landscape, figurative painting and watercolor journaling with Alabama Plein Air Artists.She worked as a commercial artist, a medical illustrator, portrait artist, and a muralist. She has enjoyed painting in watercolor for over 40 years, but more recently has enjoyed working in oil and gouache.


Susan Johnsey
Co-VP of Membership

Past club editor, Susan is a self-taught artist and has studied with well known artists Ron Lewis & John Cosby. She is a math teacher and tutor by profession. Susan is analytical and logical but enjoys using the other side of her brain to be creative and inventive. She is active in the Plein Air Painters of Alabama. Susan has traveled
in her motorhome to study with nationally recognized artists as far as California or closer to home in North Carolina.


Lynn Briggs
Co-VP of Membership

Lynn is a past president, serving in 2009-10, as Show Chairman in 2013, Parliamentarian 2012. She grew up in Mountain Brook and was a teacher of early childhood education and elementary Education before leaving teaching in 1983 for a busy family. She
has become an award-winning watercolorist in traditional style. Colorful, detailed scenes of quaint
houses, sheep, florals.


Lynda Goldstein
Co-VP of Membership

Lynda discovered her gift of painting in 2017 while also managing her own private Neurofeedback practice that she has owned since 1996. She merges acrylic paint, paper and pencils to achieve texture while incorporating metallics into each piece. A part of her unique style, she uses Gold Leaf and Paint as her Signature Medium.. She has had several successful local solo shows and was a finalist in the 2020 Adult Juried exhibit at the Shelby County Arts Council. Her work is presently hanging in the Comer Museum in Sylacauga, AL as part of the AACA’s annual installment.


Susie Caffey
Corresponding Secretary

After 25 years as an art educator in public school, five years of teaching in other venues, my focus and now is creating my own art. I work in oil, acrylic, watercolor and pastel tend to change media seasonally. Subject matter varies but I particularly enjoy representational still life and landscape painting. I’ve done many commissions and a handful of shows. I look forward to growing as an artist, continuing to learn and share my work. I hold a BA I hold a BA in Studio Art from Furman University and an MA i in Studio Art from Furman University and an MA in Studio in Art Education from the University Montevallo

Beverley Phillips
Recording Secretary

Beverley Phillips is a retired high school teacher with an interest in art inspired by her self-taught grandmother. She minored in art in college, but began using oil paints several years before retirement. She is a representational painter who often chooses animals as subjects. A recent and current goal is to learn and develop skill in plein air painting.


Charlotte McDavid
Treasurer

A very early member of MBAA, Charlotte has served twice as president, a couple times as show chair, and as club treasurer. Charlotte has a BA in history and an MBA. When her children were out of school, she found time to learn watercolor and has since studied with many nationally known artists. Charlotte is one of the founders of Alabama Plein Air Artists and still very active with them. An award winning watercolor artist, Charlotte has achieved Signature Silver status in the Watercolor society of Alabama.


Dee Falls
Past President 2022

Dee served as president in 2003 and also show chairman in 2001-2002. Dee has painted for over 25 years, establishing herself in juried competitions across the country. Dee was the featured artist in the June/July 2019 issue of Hoover’s Magazine. She is an active member and currently on the board of Alabama Plein Air
Artists.


Sara Crook
Senior Member at Large

Sara served as Show Chairman in 2013. She works primarily in oils. She trained under the tutelage of master artist John Lonergan. Always trying new techniques and expanding her knowledge of painting, her subject matter varies from landscapes, to still lifes, to whimsical flowers.


Janet Sanders

Senior Spring Show Committee Member

Award winning works in oil, acrylic, frequently on silver or gold leaf. Popular depictions of local street scenes and churches, or horses done in loose wide brush strokes. Also enjoyes depicting subjects in movement such as runners, bicyclists, running horses, cheerleaders, majorettes, etc.


Nicola Jeanette Cochran
Spring Show Chair

Nicki joined the MBAA in 2013 and has found so much value in the shows, demos, and community of fellow artists. Recruited by Janet Sanders, she became Co-Show Chair for the Spring Show 2022. She also agreed to Chair the 2023 Show Chair and lead the Show Committee. Her art style includes impressionist paintings that express various concepts
using symbolic images, such as deer, lambs, doves, and elephants. She also does portraiture, most frequently drawing portraits using a combination of pens and pencil crayons.


Marcia Hodges
Spring Show Committee Leader

Colorful oils and mixed media in loose wide brush strokes. Marcia loves painting children, bids, and moments from everyday life. A member of Dailypainters.com.


Laura Howland
Spring Show Committee Leader

Newly retired high school and community college art teacher, Laura can now devote herself to painting for herself. She works in oil, watercolor, and mixed media often exploring abstracted landscapes. Her work leans toward impressionism. Laura also enjoys portraying people and volunteers at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens.


Tom Dameron
Spring Show Committee Leader

Tom works in acrylic, pencil, and watercolor focusing on people and nature. His favorite subject is portraiture, capturing people in their normal surroundings to tell a story. Tom is also a member of the Watercolor Society of Alabama for his amazing watercolor work. Multi-talented,Tom is also a tuba player with local bands “The Old Fashioned Rhythm Method,” “The Anything Goes Trio,” and the “1920s Jazz Babies Band.”
